Good stuff although too much "modern" stuff. The "Record Bar" poster (shown about a third way through) was probably done by "Rock Star" Bill Nelson". It has all his hallmarks (I was at art school with him) and he was close, back then, to Ken Heffer, whose business it was. History....

This is a typical example of what is loosely termed "Progress". In this clip the Ridings Centre is jam packed, and it looks really good, (as it was at the time) Now it is nothing more that a couple of floors with most of the shops closed, in fact most people who go into The Ridings" these day only go in to shop at Morrisons supermarket or M&S. Even with 80% of the old shops no longer open there are STILL more shops than customers. The old Market was fantastic with stalls that covered everything that a normal household would ever need, not we don`t even HAVE a market, just a handfull of temporary stalls in front of the Cathedral and they are only open on Saturdays. It is a crying shame what has become of the old Wakefield, which was one of the best shopping areas in Yorkshire.

Future classic, watch the change to the civic quarter this year and compare, it will be massive and compulsive viewing, re visit, then and now end of 2015.

i used to go to 10p a pint night at rooftop gardens. absolutley loved it. its very very large with 3 dancefloors and plenty of cosy seating. plenty of lazers which was a brand new thing back then in the 80s. there was always a money off door entry vouchure in the wakefield express paper displayed in the vid at 3:23. it used to be £5 then £1 off with the vouchure to get in. i saw chubby brown live there once. then later on they open the doors into casanovas nightclub. you just go through a door and down a posh spiral staircase

Has anyone got any photos of the old St.Austin’s R.C. school that was on Teall Street. It was demolished in about 1970. I attended there with my older siblings mid 1950’s - 1964.

I remember the sad night up Kent 14's when Freddy Foley lost his life.

I also remember one Friday afternoon being in Peter Woods survey office. He got some old large drawings out and showed me the position of bore holes drilled in 1850/51 to prove the coal seams. I thought the put was older than 1890 but maybe not. I've a lot of good memories of the 9 years I spent there.

I worked as an electrician at Walton starting my apprenticeship in1963. I rambert the power house vividly on nights when doing routine maintenance on the alternators ( 125 Kw ).

I have to o7 most of these pictures because this was Wakefield growing up for me! I can't believe I saw a picture of Mr Smith the cockle man! He lived ten doors up from me in Wrenthorpe. He loved Morris Minors and his job. He was a great guy growing up so thankyou for including him! He was a part of Wakefield!

I worked on the market, Whizz Kids. In the Ridings, Primark when it opened, HMV over Christmas. Glorious days in the 90's. What a buzz there was, The market was massive, people everywhere! Shell now, I don't even know what Wakefield is anymore!

Many happy memories of the 50s getting roasted chestnuts off the chestnut man under the clock of the bus station and cones of warm salted peanuts from Woolworths great times!

So many childhood memories in these photo’s.I was born at 64 York street now the site of the leisure centre,remember getting warm salted peanuts in a bag in Woolworths,Saturday morning ABC Minors at the cinema,lovely hot roasted chestnuts off the chestnut man under the clock in the bus station,mum working on the biscuit stall on the open market in the 50s.Anyone else remember these?

Thanx for the memories , used to live in Wakefield my Dad was the Landlord of The Great Northern Hotel opposite Westgate Station 1965 ish . I recall I opened my first and only bank account with 'The Yorkshire Penny Bank ' and was confirmed at Wakefield Cathedral when I was 13yrs old. I now live in The Blue Mountains in Australia so it was nice to see a few places of Wakefield !

The omnia website suggests the chemist is on Westgate, and it looks to be what is now Icon bar (formerly Flares nightclub) between Natwest and Hoffmans butchers. The tunnel on the right could be the cut through to Barstow Square. The window layout on the first floor looks like it has changed (possibly done when the shop frontage was updated) but the architecture looks very similar. Visit omnia.ie website and search "chemist shop", relevant entry is about halfway down the first results page.
